When IT Cosmetics first approached me to become their UK and Ireland Brand Ambassador, it was so exciting because we both knew we were so aligned. I love the thought of empowering women, encouraging them to be themselves, and helping people to see their own beauty. But there was one word that gave me some trouble, and continues to during every step of the way. Confidence.
I think it’s really important to point out that, to me, there’s a huge difference between confidence and self-esteem. Confidence is something I’ve had from as long as I can remember; somewhat daunting scenarios just don’t bother me. As I sit and write this, I’m having a cup of tea following an event where I presented to a room of 300 people. The actual presentation, which required confidence, was a piece of cake. But when they showed me the photos back? I just didn’t want to see, because my self-esteem isn’t in the best place today.
It’s awful, but rather than listen to one of the girls in the office who was so excited to show me my photos, all I could think about was a negative. My hair didn’t feel right today. My make-up could have been prettier. I don’t look nice in that jacket. The internal conversations we have with ourselves can be really limiting. But one of the things that IT Cosmetics actively encourages us to do, which is so powerful, is to “look in the mirror and see what’s right”.
Practicing this isn’t easy, but I do it every day. Sometimes I sit back and wonder how and why I have been entrusted with the task of inspiring confidence in women every day when I don’t feel that way about myself? But actually, I think confidence is a journey and one that takes time. I don’t think there’s an end destination, and I don’t think there’s a point where you reach your most confident. You just have to dedicate time to being a bit better to yourself, and stop yourself in your tracks when you start to be negative.
On one hand I sometimes feel like a bit of a fraud, working with a brand so focused on confidence when I’m not always in that place. But from another perspective, I’m happy to admit that I’m on the same journey as the person I’m speaking to. When I ask you to get behind the brand mission at IT Cosmetics, to celebrate your most beautiful you and see what’s great about yourself, it’s because I have to do that too. I’m not trying to say “do as I say”, I’m asking you to “do as I do”. We’re all in this together.
So I hope you can join me and we can make an effort along the way to just be a little bit easier on ourselves, and take a moment to reflect on everything great before we pick at the things that are bothering us.
